FleetWise is a danish company that has developed a system for monitoring and improving the use of fuel in vehicles and fleets of vehicles. The system is currently being adopted by more and more transportation companies who want a reduction in fuel costs.
I am a partner in the company and we all have great expectations in the product - especially due to the growing focus on fuel-economy and limiting CO2 emissions as much as possible.
My role in the development was to design and implement the server-based database- and statistics systems, that recieves the data from each truck, and generates the user-requested statistics and repots. Additionally i developed the PDA software that lets the driver monitor the realtime data in each vehicle. I also developed the user-administration and rights-management system.
Data is monitored live in each vehicle and sent via GPRS to the central server. Realtime-data and statistics are avalible for relevant users
Realtime data recording and monitoring
A small box is added to each vehicle. This monitors and records the realtime data, like fuel usage, speed, gear- and brake positions, engine RPM, Idle time, acceleration-intervals, and a lot more.
Additionally the driver is able to monitor a subset of these data on a PDA. The PDA is also used for login and -out of the system.

Statistics and fuel-economy improvements
Via GPRS all the data is sent to a large database at the central server where it is stored. From here the drivers and managers can view statistics of individual drivers and departments, and compare thm in different tables and graphics.
In addition to the main technical system, FleetWise offers education of drivers on how to improve driving in order to get achieve better fuel-economy. Finally when comparing the old statistics with the ones created after the courses the drivers can monitor the improvements, and management gets an overview of the reduction in fuel usage/costs.
